Sometimes loss is too deep to manage through sadness. Impending departures temporary or final can feel unbearable. Humor can be the best barricade against a debilitating powerlessness to affect the course of things, and so we tease, .. What, me miss you? Miss who? What was your name again?? Laugh, laugh, … while inside you slowly collapse.
I Won’t Miss You was written in 2023. I was looking for a guitar part both warm and sorrowful, and so asked Sean Watkins of Grammy-winning Nickel Creek to join us. That’s Sean counting off the start. David Dower added a soulful accompaniment of piano and glockenspiel, and arranged strings for Anne Green (violin) and Martin Baudu (cello). While doing a final mix at Soundhouse in Liverpool, my go-to guitarist Jon Fellows had an idea for a simple bass line (on a bass ukulele!). He played it, we loved it. Russell Cottier produced the song.
I won’t miss you
planning our holidays
I won’t miss you
picking out places to stay
I wanted the Ritz
you picked a Motel 6
I won’t miss that at all
I won’t miss you
sitting in our car
I won’t miss you
when I’ve parked too far
from the drive-through window
and you’re teasing me hard
I won’t miss that at all
I won’t miss you
dancing in the rain
I won’t miss you
drunk in the south of Spain
on a whole lot of wine
and a little cocaine
I won’t miss that at all
these memories are going to burn away
like the morning fog on a summer day
just confetti tossed into the breeze
when it’s gone
it’s gone
I won’t miss you
sitting in our bath
I won’t miss you
soaking in the other half
you’re so sexy in suds
and you’re washing my toes
I won’t miss that at all
I won’t miss you
warming up our bed
I won’t miss you
now I’m on the sofa instead
with my can of beer
and the tv on
I won’t miss you at all
these memories are going to burn away
like the morning fog on a sunny day
just ashes tossed into the sea
when you’re gone
you’re gone
feeling alive
the radio’s on
we’re taking a drive
and we’re singing along
and you’re juking and jiving
I won’t miss you holding me near
feeling your breath warming my ear
and I hear
baby I love you so
I won’t miss that at all
No no no
